So your students are starting to read chapter books…

I am honored to have been invited to guest blog for the fabulous Kristi and Majorie’s ChartChums blog. I’m such a huge fan of their work and their book Smarter Charts. So much so that I have asked for their help on more than one occasion when I needed visuals in my own publications!

In this post you’ll find some helpful suggestions for how to support students in terms of assessment and teaching when they start reading chapter books. My charts aren’t the best, but I’m trying to learn from K&M!

Videos Galore!

I often receive emails asking if there are any videos of my teaching that I can send out. Well….here is an amazing resource. Lucy Calkins and others at the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project have posted a plethora of videos on a Vimeo account. Minilessons, conferences, read aloud, small group — it’s all there, it’s all Common Core-aligned, and it’s all free! There is a video of me teaching a fifth grade writer about the importance of considering audience when writing a persuasive piece. Check them out:

I was interviewed for an article about helping strugglers to read over summer vacation. It seems like the focus for the final article shifted a bit, but it still has some good tips:

Hello Friends!

Heinemann has posted a video of me speaking about small group conferring on YouTube:

It was shot over coffee in a cool coffee shop in the heart of Portsmouth, NH, so that explains the tapestry in the background.

I’m also leading two webinars through Heinemann starting October 17th. If you would like to join me, you can sign up here:
