Small Group Instruction in Reading, Writing, and the Content Areas



Join Jennifer Serravallo for a hands-on, research-rich exploration of small-group reading and writing instruction across ELA and the content areas. Drawing from Teaching Reading Across the Day, Teaching Writing in Small Groups, The Reading Strategies Book 2.0, and The Writing Strategies Book, participants will learn practical, research-based approaches that accelerate student growth and build transferable skills. Research shows that when reading and writing instruction are integrated and woven throughout content learning, students deepen skills across all areas. Responsive small-group instruction provides targeted support while building independence through explicit teaching, flexible grouping, and formative assessment.

Participants will:

• Understand how small-group instruction supports student success with grade-level texts.

• Use assessment data and skill progressions to form flexible small groups.

• Learn lesson structures for decoding, comprehension, vocabulary, fluency, and writing.

• Support student writers with planning, organization, elaboration, and conventions.

• Analyze classroom lesson examples through video demonstrations.

• Practice planning responsive small-group instruction.
