Teaching Reading in Small Groups: Rutgers Speaker Series

  • Rutgers University NJ (map)

Title: Teaching Writing in Small Groups

Description: Drawing from Jennifer Serravallo's Teaching Writing in Small Groups as well as The Writing Strategies Book, this workshop will show you how just a few minutes of purposeful responsive teaching can have a big impact on your students. The emphasis will be on essential practices for forming groups (based on assessment), optimizing small group time to teach with efficiency and improve independence, and will offer advice for what the rest of the class is doing while you're working with small groups of writers. No matter what curriculum or core program you use, the engaging videos and Jen's ability to break down complex concepts into actionable, doable steps will equip participants to be able to try out the ideas from the workshop right away in their own classrooms. Administrators and coaches are invited to attend, as well as classroom teachers and interventionists.

(Note: Jen will lead the first half and her colleague and member of her consulting team, Leah Steiner, will lead the second half).
