In her second year with two elementary schools, the literacy specialist supported teachers in shifting away from using a not-research-based approach of level-based running records to using formative student data and grouping students based on need. She helped teachers to monitor progress within groups using various formative assessment data points and supported them with flexible grouping, always focused on goals. The data shows an improvement from beginning to end of the year last year, and the upward trend continued this year.

Our literacy specialists’s guidance and support helped me grow tremendously as the K-6 literacy coach. Her knowledge of small group instruction and demonstrating how to deliver explicit and engaging strategy lessons allowed me to model best practices for teachers. I learned to be more responsive, meeting individual needs of students. I am a better teacher, thanks to my work with Literacy Strategies and our specialist. I am so grateful.
