The professional learning focused on effective feedback, skill progressions for assessment-based instruction, writing about reading, and improving student conversations. As a result, Grades 3–5 showed significant net growth from 2023–2024 (prior to working with a literacy specialist) to 2024–2025 (after working with a literacy specialist for approximately 30 hours): Grade 3 students meeting and exceeding expectations improved from 0 to +6, Grade 4 jumped from -7 to +15, and Grade 5 increased from +3 to +16, indicating strong instructional impact on student achievement.

I found that professional learning from the literacy specialist from Serravallo’s group was extremely helpful. I am able to group my students based on their needs and can find the goals that specifically fit my students’ needs. I also found it helpful to meet 1-1 with the literacy specialist to review my needs and plan differentiation for my classroom. From the start, she brought valuable insights and practical strategies that immediately enhanced my instruction. Her guidance through The Reading Strategies Book 2.0 not only helped me refine my approach to teaching reading, but also contributed to noticeable improvements in my students’ reading skills and their enjoyment of reading time. Her presence was a great asset to my classroom, and I truly appreciate the dedication and expertise she shared in such a short period.
